Mental States Follow Quantum Mechanics During Perception and Cognition of Ambiguous Figures
نویسندگان
چکیده
Processes undergoing quantum mechanics exhibit quantum interference effects. In this case, quantum probabilities result to be different from classical ones because they contain an additional so called quantum interference term. We use ambiguous figures to analyse if during perception-cognition by human subjects we can observe violation of the classical probability field and the presence of quantum interference. The experiments, conducted on a group of 256 subjects, evidence that we indeed have such a quantum effect. Therefore, mental states, during perception and cognition of ambiguous figures, appear to follow quantum mechanics. ∗Correspondence should be addressed to Elio Conte (e-mail: [email protected]) tel. and fax (39) 080 5478414

A more realistic quantum mechanical model of conscious perception during binocular rivalry
Since the first systematic description of binocular rivalry by Wheatstone, this fascinating phenomenon has provided several new insights into the mechanisms of visual awareness (Leopold and Logothetis, 1999). Binocular rivalry (BR) is the subjective experience of randomly alternating perceptions pertaining to the two eyes when they are presented with conflicting stimuli. Because of its nature, ...
متن کاملQuantum-like modeling of cognition
This paper begins with a historical review of the mutual influence of physics and psychology, from Freud’s invention of psychic energy inspired by von Boltzmann’ thermodynamics to the enrichment quantum physics gained from the side of psychology by the notion of complementarity (the invention of Niels Bohr who was inspired by William James), besides we consider the resonance of the corresponden...
متن کاملMotion Language Shapes People’s Interpretation of Unrelated Ambiguous Figures
When we hear a story that describes motion, do we naturally imagine the motion described? To what extent do the mental images generated through language share processing resources with perception? In our studies, people read a story describing upward or downward motion and were later asked to interpret an unrelated ambiguous figure. The figure could have been seen as a bird flying upward or dow...
متن کاملInteraction of bottom-up and top-down processes in the perception of ambiguous figures
Ambiguous figures reverse their appearance during prolonged viewing and can be perceived in two (or more) available interpretations. Both physical stimulus manipulations and cognitive control influence the perception of ambiguous figures, but the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. In the current study, the perception of an ambiguous figure was manipulated by adaptation to unambiguo...
متن کاملCoherent EEG indicators of cognitive binding during ambiguous figure tasks.
We tested the hypothesis that perception of an alternative image in ambiguous figures would be manifest as high-frequency (gamma) components that become synchronized over multiple scalp sites as a "cognitive binding" process occurs. For 171 combinations of data from 19 electrodes, obtained from 17 subjects and 10 replicate stimuli, we calculated the difference in correlation between the respons...
